Can F1 oil be used in a regular car engine and vice versa?
P. G.: We don't recommend using F1 lubricants in regular car engines. The additives in F1 lubricants are too specific, since the fluid is designed to protect the engine over a short distance only. That's why there are only small amounts of detergent, which cleans the parts, and dispersing agents, which keep foreign substances in suspension.
Basically, using an F1 lubricant in a regular car would mean that the oil would need to be changed too frequently. Using a commercially available lubricant in a V8 engine is not a good idea either. The F1 vehicle would lose power and the engine would fail after a lap or two, mainly because of the oil's unsuitable viscosity.

So your F1-related Randamp;D does not really benefit ordinary car owners?
P. G.: You're wrong about that. Because production requirements are different, our F1 project gives us an opportunity to test lots of products, especially additives, even though certain molecules are very expensive. But when they prove useful, they may eventually be used in consumer products. And there's a constant back and forth between our teams working on F1 lubricants and those working to improve oils for consumers.
Does that mean that someday there'll be a "lifetime oil" that won't ever have to be changed?
P. G.: There's been a big transformation in just a few years. You used to have to change oil every 10,000 kilometres; now it's every 20,000 kilometres and every 50,000 kilometres is fast approaching. There is even talk of every 100,000 kilometres in other fields where vehicles are lighter.
So it's theoretically possible, but difficult, extremely difficult. The problem is changes in viscosity, leading for example to a loss of energy savings over time and the consumption of certain additives. Users wouldn't have to change their oil, but their fuel efficiency would decline. Where's the benefit?
Make-up will always be necessary, because engines always consume oil. You also have to remember that our main goal is to ensure smooth engine performance. With the confirmation of new 2013 engine regulations requiring a hybrid power train in which an electric motor is paired with a turbocharged 4-cylinder direct injection engine, the F1 is gearing up for the widespread introduction of downsized mass-produced engines. It's going to be a real challenge, but will also help us to prepare for the changes in all engines.
