Beauty face-off: 8 makeup remover wipes put to the test

Beauty face-off: 8 makeup remover wipes put to the test:
A sexy smoky eye, luscious red lip stain and mascara laced-lashes are all necessary components for the perfect night out. But they're also pretty darn hard to take off at the end of the night. We've all been there before, it's 3am, you're tired and you don't want to have to scrub all your makeup off. It's not like your eyeliner or mascara is going to surrender and come off easily, so what's the point, right?
We put eight makeup remover wipes to the test to see if they really live up to claims like, "removes makeup all in one swipe;" "no greasy residue;" "dissolves all traces of makeup--even waterproof mascara." After lots of scrubbing, tingling and getting over seeing our makeup-less photos, we found the best makeup remover wipe. Read on for more.
Methodology. We looked at the top-selling makeup remover wipes on Amazon and Drugstore.com to come up with eight picks for our March Madness bracket-style competition.  Each wipe was given a number that we pulled out of a hat to create the match-ups in this head to head competition. The makeup remover wipes were tested based on their ability to remove all makeup easily, the feel and smell of the wipe and whether or not a good face washing was needed after use. All of the wipes were tested in round one and winners were tested in round two. The final two winners from round two faced-off in the final round where the top performing wipe is named. Each wipe could get a maximum score of 14. Eight wipes, seven testers and only one winner! Click through to find out who comes out on top!

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group A
Makeup: Foundation, blush, illuminator, eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes) and Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil-Free Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes (*Est 6.99 for 25 wipes).

Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (right side)
Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3
Overall: 10/14
Verdict: This wipe scored high because of its cooling sensation, lack of tingling and decent ability to remove makeup. The tester was satisfied with the results although all of her eyeliner didn't come off and the wipe "smelled weird."
VS
Neutrogena Deep Clean Oil-Free Makeup Remover Cleansing Wipes (left side)
Price: *Est 6.99 for 25 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 1 Residue: 3
Overall: 7/14
Verdict: If you like extreme tingling when wiping makeup off of your face, this wipe may be for you. However, the tester's skin felt irritated and quite frankly not so good after use. The wipe's performance also wasn't up to the testers standards. It took a lot of scrubbing to get her makeup off and even with that her waterproof eyeliner put up a fight...;and won.
And the winner is...;

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group A Winner
Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes)

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group B
Makeup: Waterproof eyeliner (on top), waterproof mascara and blush.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Studio 35 Beauty Cleansing Towelettes (Walgreens Cleansing Towelettes) (*Est $5 for 30 wipes)

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)
Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3
Overall: 10/14
Verdict: This tester wanted to see how well Noxzema stood up to waterproof eyeliner. The result? It faired just ok leaving some eyeliner even though she used firm pressure. A mediocre performance coupled with a good "feel and smell" rating left this tester somewhat satisfied.
VS
Studio 35 Beauty Cleansing Towelettes (Walgreens Cleansing Towelettes) (left side)
Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3
Overall: 10/14
Verdict: This Walgreens brand makeup remover wipe says "Compare to Pond's Original All Day Clean Wet Cleansing Towelettes," but compared to Noxzema the results were pretty much the same. The only complaint the tester had about this wipe was it left behind more makeup than the Noxzema and it was no match for waterproof eyeliner.
And the winner is...;

Round 1: Bracket 1, Group B Winner
Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes)

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group A
Makeup: Eye shadow, eyeliner on bottom lash line and mascara.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes (*Est $5.79 for 30 wipes) and Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

Yes to Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergenic Facial Towelettes (right side)
Price: *Est $5.79 for 30 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3
Overall: 9/14
Verdict: A word to the wise: Eyeliner and mascara-obsessed ladies stay clear of this wipe. After using this wipe the tester felt a "burning sensation" around her eyes - "it tingled for a bit then died down." Although the tester gave this wipe a good performance rating, she noted it took a lot of effort to get all of her makeup off and even with that extra effort there was eyeliner left over. She noted "I feel like I would need to use eye makeup remover before using this wipe."
VS
Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (left side)
Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 5 Residue: 3
Overall: 12/14
Verdict: Aveeno's Ultra-calming makeup remover wipe is a shining star in the "feel and smell" category. The tester described the scent as being powerful, very strong, but not bad. The wipe felt soft and smooth to the touch and left her skin feeling softer after use. With this wipe leaving "just a little" residue she didn't have to wash her face after. Satisfied customer.
And the winner is...;

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group A Winner
Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group B
Makeup: Mascara, blush, tinted CC cream and lipstick.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes) and Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (*Est $6.99 for 25 wipes).

Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (right side)
Price: *Est $5.50 for 25 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 4
Overall: 12/14
Verdict: Tester-approved! Almay received high scores from this tester. It felt good on her skin, removed all of her makeup and didn't leave any residue. This wipe was even able to wipe her mascara off with ease leaving her "somewhat satisfied."
VS
Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes (left side)
Price: *Est $6.99 for 25 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3
Overall: 8/14
Verdict: This Neutrogena makeup remover wipe needed some assistance to get the job done. In a battle between mascara and this wipe mascara wins hands down. The tester said she had to use more wipes to fully remove her makeup. Besides a low performance score, the tester said the wipe made her skin sting for at least 5-10 minutes after use. To put it simply, she was not satisfied at all.
And the winner is...;

Round 1: Bracket 2, Group B Winner
Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes)

Round 2: Bracket 1, Semifinals
Makeup: Foundation, blush, illuminator, eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (*Est $5.50 for 25 wipes).

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)
Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 2
Overall: 10/14
Verdict: The Noxzema makeup remover wipe performed much better than the Almay in this tester's opinion. Its ability to get most of her eyeliner off left her "very satisfied." She felt she would only need to use a tissue to remove the remaining eyeliner.
VS
Almay (oil-free) Makeup Remover Towelettes (left side)
Price: *Est $5.50 for 25 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 3 Residue: 2
Overall: 8/14
Verdict: In two words this makeup remover was: Just ok. It removed most of the tester's makeup but when she tried to get the eyeliner off it just spread it out more. This made it harder for her to get the makeup out of the corner of her eye. Overall, the tester didn't find anything to be particularly special about the wipe because of its low performance, feel and smell and residue it left.
And the winner is...;

Round 2: Bracket 1, Semifinals Winner
Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes)

Round 2: Bracket 2, Semifinals
Makeup: Tinted CC cream and mascara.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes) and Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes- Sensitive (*Est $5 for 30 wipes).

Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (right side)
Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3
Overall: 11/14
Verdict: Aveeno's fresh scented wipes were a big hit for this tester. She said they "smelled nice" and unlike other wipes she tested, they didn't burn her face. This wipe took off most of her mascara giving it a fairly high performance rating. The tester found removing her makeup required minimal effort and she was left with just a little residue.
VS
Olay Wet Cleansing Towelettes-Sensitive (left side)
Price: *Est $5 for 30 wipes
Performance: 3 Feel and Smell: 2 Residue: 3
Overall: 8/14
Verdict: Olay's cleansing towelettes received a good rating for leaving only a little bit of residue after use. Other than that this wipe left the tester unsatisfied. She had to use a lot of effort to get her makeup off and the wipe made her mascara run. The low score on "feel and smell" was due to the burning sensation caused by the wipe.
And the winner is...;

Round 2: Bracket 2, Semifinals Winner
Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes)

Final Round
Makeup: Water-resistant mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, foundation and bronzer.
Makeup remover wipes tested: Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) and Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (*Est $7.99 for 25 wipes).

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (right side)
Price: *Est $5 for 25 wipes
Performance: 5 Feel and Smell: 4 Residue: 3
Overall: 12/14
Verdict: This tester gave the Noxzema wipe high scores because it took her loads of makeup off with little effort. "I had a ton of makeup on and the majority came off my eye in one swipe," she noted. Eyeliner was no match for this wipe--all gone, but mascara only came off half way.
VS
Aveeno Active Naturals Ultra-calming Makeup Removing Wipes (left side)
Price: *Est $7.99 for 25 wipes
Performance: 4 Feel and Smell: 3 Residue: 2
Overall: 9/14
Verdict: The Aveeno wipe scores high in the performance rating because of its fast results and minimal effort to rid the tester of most of her makeup (some eyeliner and mascara was left behind). The tester complained that the smell was strong and it made her skin red, eyes burn and left some residue behind.
And the winner is...;

Final Round Winner
An old school brand that's been taking care of women's skin for years prevails in this competition. Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (*Est $5 for 25 wipes) beat out the seven other makeup remover wipes because of its ability to remove the majority of the testers' makeup with ease; and its gentle formula which didn't cause any tingling or burning of the skin.
