LAHORE: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, said on Thursday that the government should initiate serious and result-oriented talks with the Taliban. He said that war and use of force were not the solution to any problem.

Nawaz said that the ‘play of explosives and spilling of blood’ only created hatred and distances, for which Pakistan had been paying a heavy price since long. He said that the negotiations offer by the Taliban should be taken seriously as the people of Pakistan needed peace.

In a statement, Nawaz called upon the government to initiate serious, purposeful and result-oriented process of negotiations with the Taliban, without delay. He said the PML-N had always supported the process of resolving all the problems through negotiations.

He said that the resolutions, passed by parliament, had also emphasised taking concrete steps to put the matters right. He said that the nation wanted peace because without it, progress and prosperity could never be realised.

The PML-N chief said that all the stakeholders should initiate the process of negotiations with an open heart in the country’s interest. He said in view of the track record of the government, probably no one could act as a guarantor.

“However, we support the process of negotiations,” he added. Nawaz Sharif said that all the parties should keep in view the higher national interests and hold talks with sincerity and an open mind.

It may be recalled that a few days back, TTP spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan, in a video message, had offered talks to the government and said that for this Nawaz Sharif, Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Munawar Hasan should act as guarantors.
